Reefing the Mainsail

I would like to know how Rasmus owners are reefing their mainsail.  Is anyone using the original roller reefing boom? And if so, what are the advantages and disadvantages?  Anyone using jiffy reefing? I would like to hear any comments on Rasmus owners system of reefing the mainsail and the advantages and disadvantages of each.  I am trying to decide which direction to go in this matter.  Thanks for any info.
Cheers
Pat

Hello Pat!
We have changed the boom to a single line reefing boom and we are very happy with it. All the lines are operatded from cockpit and the procedure is very quick and safe. There are som pictures in the bottom of this page: http://www.nanny166.se/Sasongen08_2.htm
But the text is in Swedish.
Best regards Liv and the Rasmus Nanny

Thanks for the info on reefing Liv. I looked over your website and all the work you guys have done on Nanny through the years. It gave me some good ideas. Thanks.

Hey Pat,
Did you complete your reefing system? I revamped the jiffy reef installed by Aero's PO to reduce the number of lines. I now have one line each for two reef points. They start on the boom aft, up through the leech reef grommet and down to an aft block on the boom, forward to a double block at the mast and up through the luff reef grommet. Although I would like to reef from the cockpit this compromise works well for now since my halyard winch is still on the mast.

I think I am going with a jiffy reef with one line for each reef clew cringle(double line reefing)and one line for each luff cringle. That way I can adjust the sail using independent lines at luff and clew. I will place another winch on the mast just below the gooseneck in order to tension the clew reefing line which is run through a block below the gooseneck. As you can see, all controls will be at the mast.

I have the original boom but it has been converted to slab reefing.

a reefing track, with adjustable position blocks, has been added outboard for the leech reefing points and these are led forward to cleats on the boom near the mast.

There is a traditional hook on the luff end. I reef at the mast using a topping lift.

You drop the main, hook it on, re-tension the halliard, then pull in the reefing line as tight as you can. When you drop the topping lift and pull on the kicking strap (vang to you, it puts tension of the outer end).

It was like that when I bought the boat and works well

Euan,
By reading your comment on slab reefing system on a Rasmus it looks like I don't need a winch to tension the leech reefing line. You do it by hand and cleat it at the boom near the gooseneck. Right?
Thanks for your comments.

yes that's right. I have 2:1 purchase on reefing line and pull it in and cleat it with the topping lift on. The secret is to pull on the reef with the main unloaded. If you want to reef without luffing up, you might need a winch
